With arguably the most impressive Roman heritage outside Rome, Nîmes is truly a sight to behold. Its most awe-inspiring structure is the virtually intact Roman amphitheater. The gladiators are long gone, but a matador statue outside gives an idea of its current use, which is most celebrated during the annual Feria.
Another amazing Roman monument is the Maison Carrée, a colonnaded temple. The Temple of Diana is less well preserved, but still maintains some of its arched roof and interior details. The peaceful, surrounding Fontaine Gardens cover the grounds of the former Roman baths and still contain elegant water features.
Speaking of water, the incredible Pont du Gard is a triple-arched Roman aqueduct crossing a river northeast of Nîmes. Other Roman remains include the Tour Magne, and 2 gates that allowed access through the city walls.
The Nîmes Archaeological Museum in the former Jesuit college provides background to this history and also houses the Warrior of Grezan, a pre-Roman statue. Another museum houses a fine arts collection, and the simple cathedral is also worth visiting.
In addition to plenty of restaurants and bars, Nîmes has a good range of accommodations. Booking.com’s options include luxury hotels by Parc Expo Nimes, and cheap apartments near the train station, all easily accessible from Nîmes-Alès-Camargue-Cévennes Airport.

So many historical attractions to visit, all within easy walking distance from the Royal Hotel. Public Transport was plentiful as was the bars, restaurants and cafés. Favourite place we visited was the Arena, we also enjoyed a visit to the Roman Aqueduct, a 30 minute drive away. Everything else, we walked to. A really good variety of restaurants serving very reasonably priced meals, plus our hotel had a restaurant. Nowhere to avoid in our opinion, everyone we met was happy, helpful and kind. We would happily visit Nimes again in the future and recommend the city.

Full of Roman history, monuments in Nimes are within a walkable distance. Worth buying the Discovery pass which gets you into the amphitheatre, Roman museum, Maisonette Carree and Tour Magne. The pass can be bought from whichever site you first visit.
Also visit the Jardins de la Fontaine. The park is extensive and very impressive and you can see the natural spring that used to be the water source. We found the Castellum where the Romans brought the water supply into Nimes via the Point du Gard. From a central chamber the water was fed out to areas in Nimes through lead pipes. It's amazing to still see where the outlets for the pipes were.
From the bus station in Nimes we went on bus number 121 to Pont du Gard. This is one trip that's a must!! We got off at Vers Pont du Gard. The bus stop names are well displayed on the bus well in advance of the stop. From there was about a 10 minute walk to the visitor centre and another 10 to the aqueduct. There is a cinema and museum in the visitor centre. The museum was quite interesting but the film in the cinema seemed a bit pointless.
We also took the 130 bus to Arles. We bought a Liberty pass that got us into 4 monuments and 1 museum. We did the amphitheatre and the theatre, where we sat with our picnic lunch. The cryptoportiques, where you get to wander in the underground cellars, was more extensive than we had thought it would be. We decided on the Alyscamps for our 4th monument visit. Tombs of Roman and Christians lined the avenue leading out of Arles. Would have liked some more information on what some of the inscriptions could have been.
In Nimes visit Les Halles. This indoor food market has a superb display of produce and even if you are not buying, is well worth the visit.

Nimes is great for a few days; enough museums and Roman history to keep anyone amused for a couple of days (including children) - the town itself is relatively small but has good connections by bus and train to other areas worth exploring. The Tourist Information will provide advice on how to get there.
A combined ticket for the Roman remains and the museum is great value - especially if you engage with the audio guides.

A very clean well presented city , easy to walk around when in the old quarters. Good for shopping , eating and historical places . We visited Le Maison Carree . The arena , the Jardins de la Fontaine. On a triple combined ticket purchased on line . A very pleasant stay
Loved the immaculate service, beautiful property including the room with a balcony. Staff Made us feel very welcome ; even the General Manager welcomed us. Valet took care of our car immediately and upon departure we noticed they had vacuumed it as well after a week of traveling! with 2 cold bottles of water in the cup holders as we departed and again the manager was there to wish us safe travels across the pond. We will return.. and it’s the #1 Hotel in Nimes. Don’t pass up this 5 Star!
This place is amazing!! We loved that it was right in the middle of the "centre-ville" next to everything. 3 minutes to the Arena, 3 minutes to the Maison Carré and shops all around. The apartment had everything, was beautiful and we absolutely loved the balcony. The air conditioning worked great and we slept better than we have on our whole trip in France. The host was nice and the building is beautiful. Definitely will stay here again on our next trip to Nimes!!
The location is perfect to visit the center of Nimes, walking distance to all attractions. The owner met us at our arrival because parking is tough in this area. It is the on a top floor of the building, so if you have big heavy luggages , it can be an issue, but other than that, everything is wonderful in this apartment. It even has a jacuzzi to soak in after a long day of sightseeing. Very spacious interior space with a nice view to the colosseum.
The location is fantastic: surrounded by nature, far away from everyday noise, but at the same time not too far from the city. Nothing is left to chance, everything is taken care of down to the last detail (cleanliness, decor, etc.) The owners are exquisite, helpful and ready to welcome you and make you feel at home. This is the ideal place to relax and get in touch with this fantastic piece of France.
This is a great place to stay in Nimes. The staff are exceptionally helpful and charming and the rooms are comfortable and well-equipped. Although there are no lifts, staff immediately volunteer to carry any cases to the room. Breakfast is plentiful and varied. The hotel is well within walking distance of all the main sites of interest. We would definitely stay again. Great value for money too.
Great location just by the Nimes Central Station. Please be aware Nimes Pont Du Gard station is 15 km distant, only 10 mins on a local train from the Central Station.
Pleasant 10 min walk to the Roman amphitheatre.
Room was basic but clean, comfy, and at the rear of the hotel, so very quiet. Bathroom was a little bit tatty but clean.
Good breakfast and free drinks in the foyer 24h.
The problem is we reserved in Booking for Appart City Nimes (Comfort) we didn't know they had 2 hotels.
Once I was close to arrive (2 days earlier) Booking tells me Appart City Nimes is 61 euros (and we paid for 131 euros) so we cancelled free and changed but the hotel was for mice! Everything and the whole environment was dirty, filthy and horrible!
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and it exceeded our expectations. The room was large and very clean. The host is so lovely and breakfast was delicious. The property itself is very quiet which is lovely but you're only a 10-15 minute walk away from the centre of Nimes. We will definitely be staying here again when we are back in Nimes.
We enjoyed this nice cozy place...very quiet...not far from Nîmes center...our bedroom/apartment was well appointed..clean and nicely decorated..Jean Jacques greeted us like we were family...thank you for making our stay so special Jean Jacques et
Lol Florence...if we go back to Nîmes we will definitely book La Chambre Haute again!!
The immediate surroundings outside the hotel are not the most glamorous, though the hotel itself is delightful once you've found it and are inside. The staff were really helpful and even upgraded us to a posher room. Within a few minutes walk is the historic centre of Nîmes and it's less than 10 minutes walk to the amphitheatre.
A very nice hotel, driving distance from Nîmes and many tourist attractions and hikes.
Small cozy rooms in a lovely looking Hotel, with a convenient private parking (shaded by trees which would be a boon during summer).
The room has air conditioning, and is very quiet.
The staff was very courteous and welcoming.
While a basic hotel, our room was spacious, clean and had everything we needed. It was located across from the railway station and offered convenient, reasonably priced car parking. Nimes Arena was about a 15 minute walk, with other attractions further away. Breakfast was good, and the staff were always helpful.
Location was an easy walk to the historical old town. Breakfast was good with very good variety. Hotel has a long driveway so is setback from the traffic and noise. This gave it a bit of an oasis setting, but it was a bit more difficult to find. Lots of free parking. Room met our needs.
Great location in the city center of Nimes.
Friendly staff (they even called us when they thought we hadn't checked in already)
Hotel has a lot of character (some floors are uneven, which adds to the experience)
This hotel is wonderful in all respects, but the best thing about it is its location. Right in the middle of everything and only a very short walk to the spectacular Arena of Nimes. We were very impressed.
We made an overnight stop whilst on a long road journey through France.
It was close to the autoroute so ideal for this purpose. We ate in the on-site restaurant which was really good actually
Rooms impeccably clean.
Bar, lobby, restaurant, pool, spa - perfection.
I will only stay at this hotel on any future visits to Nîmes.
Highly recommend.
